Recent skylight work
Park Slope is brownstone and limestone row houses, three and four stories, and nearly all of them have flat roofs. The room people want light in is almost always the same one: the middle of the parlour floor, or the top floor rear, where the house runs deep and no window reaches. That is the job we do most often on the Slope.
A flat roof needs a curb mounted unit set on a proper insulated curb and flashed into the membrane. A deck mount meant for a pitched roof does not belong up there, and when we get called to a leak on a Slope row house it is very often because somebody put one there anyway. Replacement on a curb that is still sound starts at $2,079 installed. Cutting a brand new opening, framing it, curbing it and finishing the shaft starts at $3,500.
Much of Park Slope sits inside a historic district, so if the skylight will be visible from the street there is a Landmarks step before anything gets ordered. Work set back behind a parapet on a rear roof usually is not visible. We look at your roof and tell you which side of that line you are on before you commit to anything.

If the skylight is visible from the street, yes, and visibility is the test Landmarks actually applies. A unit set flat on a rear roof behind a parapet usually is not visible from the sidewalk. That is one of the most common jobs in this neighborhood. A row house stair runs up the middle where there are no windows, and a skylight at the top of it drops daylight through every floor. New openings start at $3,500 installed.
