Skylight Installation and Repair in Bushwick

Bushwick is two jobs in one neighborhood. There are the frame and brick rowhouses off Bushwick Avenue, Knickerbocker, Wilson and Grove, most with a flat roof and an original stair skylight, and there is the warehouse and loft stock along the Morgan and Jefferson corridor where the roof is a wide commercial deck and the glazing is curb mounted or a dome.

The roofs here are older than people expect. A lot of them are tin or rubber over the original deck with more than one layer of history underneath, so the curb condition matters more than the unit selection. We open the curb up, tell you what is actually under the flashing, and price the repair separately instead of burying it. A replacement on a sound curb starts at $2,079 installed and a new opening starts at $3,500.

On the loft and commercial side we do curb mounted units, banks of them, and acrylic domes where a dome is what the building wants. We will always show you the glass comparison first, because glass stays clear and a dome yellows, but if the dome is the right call we will sell you the dome and say why.

Bushwick skylight questions

Our building is a converted warehouse. Is that different work?

Different in scale rather than in kind. The deck is usually wider, the curbs are often site built and out of square, and access can need a lift. We price the machine as its own line so you can see exactly what the equipment is costing rather than finding it folded into a unit price. Our commercial page covers this side of the work.

Can you replace an acrylic dome?

Yes, and we will give you an honest comparison first. Glass stays clear, it is quieter in the rain and it insulates better, and a glass unit comes with the factory shade where a dome comes with neither shade nor screen. Domes are cheaper and there are buildings where a dome is the right answer. If that is what you want, we will quote it.

The roof is tin. Does that change the flashing?

It changes how the curb is detailed and how the new work ties into what is already there, and it is a good reason not to let anyone caulk their way out of a leak. Older tin roofs with multiple layers over them hide a lot. We want to see what is under the existing flashing before anything is ordered.

Is Bushwick landmarked?

Most of it is not, which makes the work simpler here than in the brownstone districts. There are individually designated buildings and a small number of protected blocks, so we check your address rather than assuming. Our NYC permits page sets out what needs a filing and what does not.

What area is covered?

Bushwick including Bushwick Avenue, Knickerbocker, Wilson, Grove, Myrtle and the Morgan and Jefferson loft blocks. Zip codes 11221, 11237 and 11207.

Do you offer financing on this?

Yes. We use Wisetack, which gives a real decision without a hard credit pull and takes about a minute on your phone. All financing is subject to credit approval and your terms may vary. Nothing is added to your price for using it.
