Greenpoint is mostly wood frame row houses, a great many of them two and three family, with flat roofs and narrow deep floor plans. The framing under those roofs is old and it has usually been patched more than once, which is why we always look at what a curb is fastened to here before we quote a unit to sit on it.
The right unit on these roofs is curb mounted. Most of our work in Greenpoint is replacement, because the skylights up there now are old acrylic domes and early glass units that have hazed over or begun letting water past the flashing. Replacement on a curb that is still sound starts at $2,079 installed. Cutting a new opening starts at $3,500.
Greenpoint has a historic district covering a good part of the older housing stock, so where a unit would be visible from the street there is an approval step first. Most rear roof work behind a parapet is not visible. We check your roof and say plainly which one it is.
No, it just changes what we inspect. On an older frame house we want to see the roof deck and the rafters the curb will sit on before we quote, because on a house of this age the curb sometimes needs rebuilding first. Better to hear it at the estimate than mid job.
Yes. We plan access and hours around tenants and put the schedule in writing where a lease or a managing agent needs it. A straight replacement is normally a single day and the roof is closed the same day.
We install both and we will steer you to glass. Acrylic yellows and hazes, glass stays clear, it is quieter in rain and it insulates better. Acrylic is lighter and spans further, which still matters on some roofs. We show both prices.
It depends on whether the work stops at the roof covering or opens the deck itself, and landmark status can add a separate filing even when nothing shows from the street. We tell you which one your job is before you commit.

For a replacement on an existing curb, usually yes. Measure the outside of the curb and put it into our Skylight Finder and it will price the unit and the install on the spot. Anything structural we want to see first.
