Recent skylight work
Long Island City is three different roofs. There are the old brick row houses of Hunters Point, some of them inside a historic district, with flat roofs and the same dark middle room as any Brooklyn row house. There are the converted factories and warehouses, where a top floor loft may sit under a roof that already has a skylight opening from its industrial days. And there are the new towers along the waterfront, where a skylight is a penthouse question that goes through the building.
On the row houses and the loft conversions the job is a curb mounted glass unit on an insulated curb, flashed into the roof. Replacement on a sound curb starts at $2,079 installed and a new opening starts at $3,500. On the old industrial buildings we see something we see almost nowhere else in this volume: galvanized steel pyramid and ridge skylights with wire glass, rusted from the inside out, with putty that has gone hard and fallen away. Those get replaced with a thermally broken aluminum pyramid or ridge on a rebuilt curb, with tempered and laminated insulated glass, quoted after a site visit because no two are the same size.

We replace it. Wire glass was never safety glass; the mesh holds the pieces together in a fire but it breaks into wired shards that cut badly, and the steel frames rust from the inside. The replacement is an aluminum pyramid or ridge with tempered and laminated insulated glass on a rebuilt curb, sized to the existing opening or a new one.
Part of it is. The Hunters Point Historic District covers the 45th Avenue blocks near Vernon Boulevard. If your skylight would be visible from the street, Landmarks reviews it first; a unit set flat on the rear of the roof usually is not visible. We look at the roof and tell you which side of that line you are on before anything is ordered.
Usually, and the roof often makes it easy because the old industrial openings are already framed. Whether you own the building or an apartment in it decides the paperwork, and the building will want a certificate of insurance, a written scope and a roof warranty answer before it says yes. We put that package together.
